  6. This document covers various topics above and beyond the basic
  7. information given in the BBEdit Lite Quickstart.
  8.  
  9. Desktop File Problems
  10. ------- ---- --------
  11. On occasion, you may find that the Finder does not display the correct
  12. icon for BBEdit documents, or that you cannot drag documents onto the
  13. BBEdit application (or an alias to the application) to open them.
  14.  
  15. This behavior is not indicative of a problem with BBEdit; rather, it is
  16. an indication that the database that the Finder uses to associate
  17. applications, icons, and documents (known as the "Desktop file") has
  18. become confused or corrupted.
  19.  
  20. When this happens, it is usually desirable to force the Finder to rebuild
  21. the Desktop. To do this, reboot your machine, and immediately hold down
  22. the Shift key until the message "Extensions Off" appears. As soon as
  23. this message appears, release the Shift key, and hold down the Command
  24. and Option keys. For each volume that mounts at startup, the Finder
  25. will ask whether you wish to rebuild the Desktop. Click "OK", and the
  26. Finder will do so.

  29. Memory Usage
  30. ------ -----
  31. BBEdit uses System temp memory to hold the files it opens, so you will
  32. not need to increase the application's partition size to edit large
  33. files. However, some operations, such as Copy and Paste on large blocks
  34. of text, or performing a multi-file search over many files and folders,
  35. may require that more memory be made directly available to the
  36. application. If you often perform tasks like these, we recommend that
  37. you increase BBEdit's recommended memory size allocation to 750K or
  38. more, as your needs dictate.

  41. "Can't Undo" Alerts
  42. ------ ----- ------
  43. A number of actions, most notably many extensions, are not undoable.
  44. As a matter of course, BBEdit will pose an alert: "<action> is not
  45. undoable. Do you still wish to proceed?" If these alerts annoy you,
  46. you can turn them off. The appropriate option is in the Editor section
  47. of the "Preferences" dialog. (The "Preferences..." command is found 
  48. under the Edit menu.)

  51. Printing with Substituted Fonts
  52. -------- ---- ----------- -----
  53. Because of idiosyncracies in the LaserWriter driver 7.1 and earlier,
  54. there are some character spacing anomalies when printing with a
  55. substituted monospaced font (i.e. Monaco). To avoid these problems,
  56. print in a non-substituted, monospaced PostScript font such as Courier.
  57. (With BBEdit, you can of course edit in one font, and print in
  58. another.)
  59.  
  60. These problems may have been resolved in version 8.1.1 or later of the
  61. LaserWriter driver. Some problems may remain when using non-PostScript
  62. printers (e.g. StyleWriters or DeskWriters).

  65. Fractional Spacing
  66. ---------- -------
  67. BBEdit 3.5 supports a "Fractional Spacing" option when printing. We
  68. recommend that you use this option if you are printing in a small
  69. (less than 9-point) font size.

  72. FaxSTF "FaxPrint" Printer Driver
  73. ------ ---------- ------- ------
  74. Version 2.2.3 of the "FaxPrint" printer driver, supplied with the FaxSTF
  75. fax software package, has a bug in it which can cause all applications,
  76. not just BBEdit, to malfunction. STF Technologies has been notified of
  77. the problem. In the meantime, to avoid potential problems, choose another
  78. printer driver, such as the ImageWriter or LaserWriter driver, except
  79. when you are planning to fax documents directly from within BBEdit.
  80. Contact STF Technologies for the latest information on the availability
  81. of a fix. (As of the writing of this note, FaxSTF has been updated
  82. to version 3.0.)

  85. LaserWriter "Preferences Damaged" Warning
  86. ----------- --------------------- -------
  87. On occasion, version 8.2.2 of the LaserWriter driver will issue a
  88. warning message about missing or damaged preferences. We have contacted
  89. Apple regarding this issue, and they believe it to be due to a bug in
  90. the LaserWriter driver. We have also had reports that the recently
  91. released LaserWriter 8.3 driver may exhibit this same problem. If you
  92. get this message, simply choose "Page Setup" or "Print" from the File
  93. menu, and you should be able to continue without any difficulty.

  96. NOW Utilities
  97. --- ---------
  98. Older versions of Super Boomerang have a bug which affects BBEdit;
  99. in particular, you cannot type upper-case letters in the "Save As..."
  100. dialog. This bug is fixed in version 4.0 and later of the NOW Utilities
  101. package; contact Now Software for an update.
  102.  
  103. Now Save causes BBEdit's "File" menu to get scrambled. To avoid this,
  104. turn off Now Save when running BBEdit.
  105.

  107. Standard File Hacks
  108. -------- ---- -----
  109. There are some third-party extensions which modify the standard "Open"
  110. and "Save" dialogs (known colloquially as "Standard File"). In a couple
  111. of known cases, some of these extensions have a bug which causes
  112. correctly written applications to crash. Specifically:
  113.  
  114. -    "Click, there it is!", version 1.0.1. Version 1.0.4 is current, and
  115.     fixes this problem. Registered owners should contact the author for
  116.     more information.
  117.     
  118. -    Quickeys version 2.1 also appears to have a similar problem.
  119.  
  120. If either of these extensions is installed, BBEdit will most likely
  121. crash when trying to bring up a Standard File dialog. (BBEdit's "Open"
  122. and "Save" dialogs should work correctly, but other dialogs, such as 
  123. the File Types section of the preferences dialog, will not.)
  124.  
  125. In addition, problems have been reported in which the Standard File
  126. Package crashes, or BBEdit takes an "emergency exit", when Peter
  127. Lewis' "CDIconKiller" extension is in use.

  130. The BalloonWriter INIT
  131. --- ------------- ----
  132. Version 1.0.1 of Apple's "BalloonWriter" extension interferes with
  133. the correct display and operation of BBEdit's dynamic menus. To avoid
  134. this conflict, disable or remove BalloonWriter from your system.

  137. The Programmer's Editor Package
  138. --- ------------ ------ -------
  139. BBEdit was written with libraries which are part of the Programmer's
  140. Editor Package. The PE Package provides high-performance text editing,
  141. searching, directory search, and pattern-match capabilities for use
  142. in text-manipulation programs. For more information, contact us by one
  143. of the methods listed below.
